The copyediting industry continues to charge by the word or page. I find that I do my best work when I charge by the hour. I am more than willing to contract by the industry standards, but I am fast and efficient, meaning, I can save you a ton of money and still be satisfied with my income. Typically, a first work by an author, and the first edited draft, including all the discussions, phone calls, emails, and my own work runs about $500, give or take a little. Each draft including layout, corrections, and final galley corrections typically run a little less than the first run-through. I can defray much of my costs because overhead is low. I may overlap with authors, but I give my undivided attention to you when we are in the middle of a project.
Bigger projects, such as workbooks, manuals, and textbooks can be very expensive. The layout and design entail more expenses and time. I can make it a more simple look for less cost to you, or I can get more of the materials and design from you to reduce your costs. Starting from the ground up means I spend more time developing your product.
